Drowsy driving poses a significant threat to both drivers and pedestrians alike in Atlanta and surrounding communities. Countless drivers navigate our roads daily, fatigued and sleep-deprived, unaware of the risks they are taking. Sadly, the consequences of drowsy driving can result in devastating accidents and shattered lives.

But why are so many drivers driving fatigued, and what can we do to stay safe on Atlanta roads?

Most drivers think they’re not drowsy driving unless they fall asleep behind the wheel. This isn’t true. Drowsy driving refers to operating a motor vehicle while feeling excessively sleepy or fatigued. It is a hazardous driving behavior that can impair a driver’s alertness, concentration, and reaction times, putting the driver, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users at significant risk.

Even worse, many drivers in Atlanta don’t even realize how dangerous drowsy driving truly is.  While other driving hazards may receive more attention, drowsy driving remains a silent threat, affecting countless individuals on the roads each day. The consequences of drowsy driving accidents can be devastating, leading to injuries, loss of life, and immense emotional and financial burdens for victims and their families.

Just How Dangerous are Drowsy Drivers in Atlanta?

The NHTSA estimates that in one recent year, there were 91,000 car accidents involving drowsy drivers. These accidents led to the injuries of around 50,000 people and nearly 800 deaths.

Georgia ranked 5th most dangerous for drowsy drivers based on one latest study.

GuntherMitsubishi.com recently conducted a comprehensive analysis of 2022 County Health Rankings data, aiming to identify the most dangerous states for driving in America. The study focused on two key factors: the percentage of people suffering from insufficient sleep and the rate of motor vehicle deaths per 100,000 individuals.

Sadly, Georgia secured the 5th position, placing it among the most perilous states to drive in concerning drowsy drivers. The study revealed that the Peach State had an alarming 38% rate of insufficient sleep among its population, coupled with a 10.4% rate of motor vehicle deaths per 100,000 people.

Furthermore, the analysis highlighted that Georgia experienced an average traffic volume of 371 vehicles per meter of major roadways, and a significant 21% of driving fatalities were attributed to alcohol-impaired driving. Lastly, the state recorded a distressing 7,755 driving-related deaths in 2019.

Why is Drowsy Driving So Dangerous?

Lack of sufficient sleep can significantly impact your performance and safety on the road, leading to cognitive impairment that resembles the effects of alcohol consumption. Your attentiveness, coordination, and judgment while driving can suffer when you go without proper rest for extended periods.

In fact, staying awake for at least 18 hours without sleep can have a cognitive impact equivalent to a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.05%. Pushing the boundaries further, being awake for at least 24 hours without sleep is comparable to having a BAC of 0.10%, exceeding the legal BAC limit of 0.08% across all states.

Drowsy driving can result from various factors, including:

Even if drivers stay awake, drowsiness can impair their driving ability by reducing alertness, slowing reaction times, and compromising decision-making skills. This not only poses a risk to the driver but also endangers other road users and pedestrians.

Consequences of Drowsy Driving Accidents

Drowsy driving accidents can have devastating consequences, leading to many injuries and fatalities. From minor fractures and burns to more serious and life-threatening brain injuries, drowsy driving accidents can turn a victim’s life upside down.
